The following explains the divisions that comprise Chelmsford Youth Baseball. These divisions are:
Tee Ball
Minors
Farm Extension
Youth League Farm-AA
Youth League Farm-AAA
Youth League Majors
Senior League Farm
Senior League Majors
The Patriot Division
Participation in each division is determined by age requirements and, in some cases, ability. CYB makes every effort to ensure that all kids play at a level where they can learn, have fun, and compete.
Division: Tee Ball
Description:Players hit off tees. Everyone plays in field and bats. No scores or team standings are recorded.
Age:5 – 6 (6 year olds in their first year of participation)
Tryout Required? No
Notes: Players are assigned to teams based on the school district in which they live to make it likely that they will know some teammates, which should increase the likelihood of a fun experience, and to make it easy to car-pool. 6 year olds who are participating in CYB for the first time play Tee Ball, while 6 year olds who played Tee Ball during the previous year play in the Minors Division.
Division: Minors
Description:Coaches pitch, 9 players at a time play in the field, rotated, and everyone bats. No scores or team standings are recorded.
Notes: All 8 year olds and 9 year olds are evaluated at the beginning of the year to assure that teams are balanced. Also, the evaluations identify 9 year olds who are ready for YL Farm AA; a few 9’s play in YL Farm AA while most of the 9’s play in Farm Extension. All 8’s play in Farm Extension.
Division: Youth Farm AA
Description:Players pitch. Cal Ripken League rules apply with CYB rule modifications. Scores are recorded and team standings are kept. There are year-end playoffs and all-star games.
Notes: 10 –12 year olds may try out for Youth Majors but are not required to try out for Youth Farm. Players who do not try out or who are not selected for the Majors are placed on a Youth Farm AA team. Also, a small number of 9 year olds play on Youth Farm AA teams based on the Farm Extension evaluations.
Division: Youth Farm AAA
Description:Players pitch. Cal Ripken League rules apply with CYB rule modifications. Scores are recorded and team standings are kept. There are year-end playoffs and all-star games.
Notes: 10 – 12 year olds may try out for Youth Majors but are not required to try out for Youth Farm. Players who do not try out or who are not selected for the Majors are placed on a Youth Farm AAA team.
Division: Youth Majors
Description: Highly competitive. Players pitch. Cal Ripken League rules apply with CYB rule modifications. Teams use a ten man batting order. All players must play three innings both offensively and defensively. Scores and other stats are maintained. There are year-end playoffs.
Notes: Players try out for Youth Majors and are chosen for a team in a draft. Each manager drafts his own team. Draft order is determined by reverse order of finish the previous year. Once a player is chosen for a Youth Majors team, the player remains on the same team until he reaches Youth League age 13. Each team has 13 players. A minimum of two and a maximum of four ten year olds must be on each team.
Division: Senior Farm
Description:Players, 13 and 14 only, pitch. (15 year olds may not pitch in this division.) Babe Ruth League rules apply supplemented with CYB rule modifications. All players bat. All players play defensively at least every other inning. Scores and other stats are maintained. There are year-end playoffs and all-star games.
Notes: 13 – 15 year olds may try out for Senior Majors. Players who do not try out or who are not selected for the Majors are placed on a Senior Farm team.
